Rural Broadband lagging – time to look for solutions

Well we’ve heard it all before from various different news sites, blogs, twitters but now even the House of Lords has criticised the lack of progress between urban and rural broadband delivery. According to its report (a six month inquiry by the Lords’ communication committee)  ‘Broadband for all – an alternative vision‘ the government policy on delivering particular speeds to users has “had a detrimental effect on policy-making and the long term national interest”. This is without taking into account that given the growth of the internet to date by 2020 these speeds would already be outdated and too slow, with general households expected to require two to three times more than 24Mbps. Of course alongside speed other considerations need to be made, such as reliability, latency etc. One of the points raised by the report is that “every community … Continue reading

They have launched a new national campaign to boost broadband services across the UK but with particular focus on rural broadband. Britain’s average Broadband speed was clocked at 5Mbps in the previous quarter, but this was fast enough to see the UK ranked only 25th in the world. BritORA claimed broadband connections in smaller towns and villages can often be so slow that some websites are completely unusable – a scenario it described as “disastrous” for local businesses.
